Jack Russell Puppy Naming Tips

What is the best name to give to the new Jack Russell Terrier puppy? Naming the puppy is momentous event that must not be done hurriedly or lightly. It must be a name that both the Jack Russell puppy and the owner must love. To have the right Jack Russell Terrier or dog name, here are some key points that an owner must consider:

1. Dogs respond to short simple names.
Eloquent language does not have any significance in the dog’s mind. Such is merely useless gibberish. But short words stay long in the dog’s memory. This is why short commands are indispensable in training the dog. Connected to this, the name of the dog should consist of one or two syllables only.

2. Avoid confusing names.
The name of the puppy or dog should not sound like a command. For example, the name “Fletch” sounds similar to “fetch”. If the owner commands the dog to fetch something, the dog may think that its master is calling him.

3. The dog’s name should be good enough for the public.
While certain names bring to mind a really hilarious memory, other people may not appreciate such names with the dog. And though the dog does not fully realize the meaning of all human words, it can sense when the people around it are embarrassed or making fun of its name.

4. Dogs are not racehorses.
Owners of racehorses have a propensity of christening the horses with elegant and grand names, such as Sir Lawrence de Charlemagne. If the dog owner badly needs to give a grand name for the dog, such as Captain Lion-hearted Valiant Emperor Collie, he should choose a nickname as well. Such grand names will be utilized for official forms, not for everyday use. Nicknames can be given by children, who have the ability to combine creativity and simplicity

5. Think twice before naming the dog after a relative.
Even though the new dog appears to be the most beautiful creature encountered by the owner, this is not enough reason to name it after a relative, like an uncle, an aunt, or a grandparent. Such is not considered an honor. Most will view it as an insult.

6. Retain the original given name.
If the newly-bought dog has a name already, it is best to retain this name and get on with other important matters that are meant to develop a strong bond between dog and master.

7. Test the chosen name.
Once a name has been chosen, the owner must try using it on the dog for one or two days. If the name clicks, then the right name has been found. If not, the human language offers infinite possibilities. The owner must try again.

8. Rewards are positive re-enforcers.
On the first time the Jack Russell Terrier dog responds to his new name, the owner must remember to reward the dog either with food, treats or hugs. This will signal the Jack Russell that it was pleasing its master. Thus, every time the dog hears that particular sound (its name) it will come running towards its master, alert and eager.

By keeping the above points in mind, the process of naming the new Jack Russell puppy or dog will not take too long or demand too much effort.
